4x4 Driving Track Series

Located just a two hour drive south west of Brisbane is Gordon Country in the Goomburra Valley. Situated on a whopping 4,000 hectares, there’s very few properties in Australia that offer the same level of privacy and freedom as Gordon Country. Founded by Ian and Sue Gordon, the slogan for the park is ‘the way Australia used to be’ and it certainly lives up to its slogan with bountiful riverside camping, secluded spots, and so much room to move. I can picture Banjo Paterson writing the poem ‘Waltzing Matilda’ in a similar setting. The owners take immense pride in their private ecotourism property which offers plenty of camping, cabin, and caravan stays surrounded by an amusement park of 4WD, mountain bike, and horse tracks.

How to get there
Gordon Country borders the Great Dividing Range with beautiful stretches of rainforest extending from Gondwana Rainforest into the heritage listed Main Range National Park. If you’re driving from Brisbane, head north on the Cunningham Highway towards Warwick and continue another 21km from the peak at Cunningham’s Gap. When you see the driver reviver station, turn right and continue for another 10km until you reach the intersection where the only option is a right-hand turn. From this point, you’ll find the first Gordon Country sign roughly 20km’s down the road.

What’s on offer
Adventure is definitely at the heart of this park, with plenty of activities for the whole family. Encapsulated by stunning landscapes everywhere you turn, you can choose to hike mountains with ‘Daintree-esque’ rainforest walks, catch some fish by the river, or just sit back and unwind with a few cold ones! If you’re feeling adventurous, there are kilometres of 4WD tracks throughout the property which range from easy to intermediate.

In addition, you can venture through the park on your mountain bike in search of one of many waterfalls or bring your horse if you’re looking for a more traditional experience. With so much land at your fingertips, you can let your imagination run wild in the true spirit of the Gordon Country experience.

Accommodation
With roughly 4,000 acres covering Gordon Country, there’s plenty of camping available on the river that runs through the park. There’s about 20 different sections of the park where you can choose to camp each offering differing landscapes and amenities, so if you’re looking for a detailed camping map and information, visit the Gordon Country website. Gordon Country is also dog friendly, so if you think your four-legged friends would enjoy roaming the countryside, they’re more than welcome!

In addition to a range of powered and non-powered camping options, the parks also offer Heritage cabins with solar powered lights and gas fridges and stoves, along with Retreat cabins which have solar powered everything. While the amenities differ depending on which site you choose, there’s plenty of free firewood you can collect from anywhere in Gordon Country. On the other hand, if it’s more convenient then there’s bagged timber available at the signpost for $16 per bag.

Bookings
There’s no need to call to arrange a booking; all bookings can be made securely through their website’s booking portal. In terms of costs, the Heritage and Retreat cabins vary depending on the time of year, however camping prices start from $18 per night for adults, $11 per night for children, and children under the age of four are free. There’s also a flat maintenance fee of $10 per car and $30 per 4WD which includes access to all the tracks.
