Taking entrants through some of the harshest off-road conditions in Australia, the Finke Desert Race is one of the most prestigious and gruelling desert races on Earth.
The 452km race takes place between Alice Springs and Apatula – a community once called Finke – and began in 1976 as a competition between local riders. A snaking course of heavily corrugated, vibrant red tracks, the ‘there and back’ race’s clout has grown steadily over the decades. Unsurprisingly, the 2019 Finke Desert Race is going to be the most competitive ever; so many racers applied for the car category this year that its capacity has been increased by 15 places.
Whether they’re on a bike or in a car, Finke competitors must endure an intense two days of desert racing. This is evidenced by the large number of entrants that don’t complete the race each year – a fact which makes it obvious that Finke is one tough off-road race. However, it also means having a competent and reliable team of sweep vehicles is essential for the event.
In 2019, TJM is a sweep vehicle partner for the Finke Desert Race. Sweep vehicles offer support at specific distance intervals throughout the race, which helps to keep the track clear and the event running safely and smoothly. This means that, when the dust kicks up on June 7 in Alice, TJM will be as close to the action as possible.
So, from us at TJM to all racers and attendees, we wish you all the best at this year’s Finke Desert Race. Here’s to another year of racing pulses and red dust in 2019!
TJM will be posting updates and articles about the event and the Outback at large, so keep an eye on this website as we get closer to the race: tjmfinke.com.au
